Scotchcast Plus is a synthetic casting tape that combines the strength of fiberglass with handling that feels closer to plaster. It is lightweight, durable, has a smooth finish, and is now available in our catalog in a wide range of widths and patient-friendly colors.
Why Synthetic Over Plaster
Synthetic casts cure faster than plaster, weigh significantly less, and resist denting better over the life of the cast. For pediatric and active adult patients, the weight difference alone improves compliance. Scotchcast Plus also produces a smoother finish than older fiberglass tapes, which reduces the need for additional padding and trimming.
Width Selection by Anatomical Site
Width selection follows standard orthopedic practice. The 1" and 2" rolls are typical for upper-extremity and pediatric work, 3" rolls cover most adult forearm and lower-leg casts, and 4" and 5" rolls are used for adult long-leg and body casting. Stocking at least two widths in white plus a few colors covers the majority of casting volume in an outpatient orthopedic clinic.
Color Options and Patient Experience
Beyond standard white, Scotchcast Plus is stocked in black, blue, light blue, red, green, bright green, bright orange, purple, rose, and yellow. Color choice has a real effect on pediatric compliance — letting kids pick a color often makes the casting experience markedly easier. For adult athletes, school colors are a frequent request.
Application Notes
Cast technique still matters: apply over a clean stockinette and adequate cast padding, dip the roll briefly in room-temperature water, and roll on with gentle overlap. Synthetic tape cures via moisture, so working time is limited — open only what the case requires. Gloves are required during application because the resin will adhere to skin.
Inventory Planning
Most clinics keep heavier par levels in 2" and 3" widths and lighter par levels in the larger and smaller widths and specialty colors. Case packs of 10 rolls make it easy to align par levels to weekly casting volume.
Bottom Line
Scotchcast Plus has earned its place as an orthopedic standard by combining clinical performance with patient-friendly handling and color options. A focused range of widths plus three or four colors is usually enough to serve a busy casting room without overstocking.
