Dressings

Dressings are specialized materials applied directly to wounds to promote healing and provide protection against external contaminants. The category includes a vast array of options, such as transparent films, hydrocolloids, foams, alginates, and traditional gauze. Used by clinicians across all specialties, the choice of dressing depends on the wound’s exudate levels, depth, and location. Practitioners must prioritize products that manage moisture balance and allow for atraumatic removal to protect delicate new tissue. High-performance dressings are vital for optimizing the healing trajectory, reducing dressing change frequency, and ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes for various wound types.

From simple gauze pads to advanced antimicrobial foams, dressings drive wound healing outcomes. PriconMed stocks the full clinical formulary so you can match dressing chemistry to wound stage, exudate level, and patient comfort.

What is it?

A wound dressing is a sterile or clean covering placed in contact with a wound to absorb exudate, maintain a moist healing environment, protect against contamination, and deliver therapeutic agents such as silver or iodine. Modern dressings are categorized by their primary mechanism: absorptive, occlusive, antimicrobial, or interactive.

Types

Gauze and non-woven spongesVersatile, low-cost workhorse for cleaning, packing, and primary coverage. Available sterile and non-sterile, woven and non-woven.
Transparent film dressingsThin polyurethane films (e.g., Tegaderm) that allow visual wound monitoring. Used over IV sites and superficial wounds.
Hydrocolloid dressingsSelf-adhesive wafers that form a gel on contact with exudate. Excellent for pressure ulcers and minor burns.
Foam dressingsHighly absorbent polyurethane foams for moderate-to-heavy exudate wounds. Many include silicone borders for atraumatic removal.
Alginate and hydrofiber dressingsDerived from seaweed or carboxymethyl cellulose; absorb up to 20× their weight. Ideal for cavity wounds and heavy drainage.
Antimicrobial dressingsSilver, iodine, or PHMB-impregnated dressings used on infected or high-bioburden wounds.

How to choose

  • Assess wound exudate level — film for none, hydrocolloid for light, foam for moderate, alginate for heavy.
  • Consider wound depth: cavity wounds need packing-friendly alginates or hydrofibers.
  • Factor in periwound skin fragility; choose silicone borders for fragile patients.
  • Verify sterility for any open or surgical wound application.
  • Match size to wound + 1–2 cm margin on intact skin.

Common clinical uses

  • Acute surgical incisions and post-operative wound coverage
  • Stage 1–4 pressure injuries
  • Diabetic foot ulcers and venous leg ulcers
  • Skin tears, abrasions, and minor burns
  • Donor sites and skin graft coverage

Frequently asked questions

Are these dressings sterile?
Most individually packaged dressings are sterile. Bulk gauze is typically clean (non-sterile) — check the product label and packaging marking.
How often should dressings be changed?
Change frequency depends on the dressing type and exudate level. Foam and hydrocolloid dressings are designed to stay in place 3–7 days; gauze is typically changed every 12–24 hours.
Can I shower with these dressings?
Transparent film and waterproof foam dressings are shower-safe when properly sealed. Gauze and alginate dressings should be kept dry.
